Geneva, 26th April 2021 – The trivalent influenza (flu) vaccine manufactured by Instituto Butantan, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was included in the list of vaccines prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO). Consequently, the Butantan flu vaccine can be supplied to other countries through the United Nations procurement agencies, such as UNICEF and PAHO Revolving Fund.
The WHO prequalification represents a recognition of Butantan’s good manufacturing practices, the production processes and quality control, as well as clinical, pharmacovigilance procedures, involved in the manufacturing and registration of vaccines. Butantan is the largest producer of influenza vaccines in Latin America, with 80 million doses available each year, made by the technology of inoculation of embryonated eggs.
From now on, Butantan’s production surplus can contribute to global vaccine supply.
