The 2024 UNICEF Vaccine Industry Consultation (VIC) took place last week, covering critical topics on the evolving immunization landscape and updates from the WHO prequalification team.
During the panel session, with co-panelist Laetitia Agostini Bigger from IFPMA, DCVMN CEO, Rajinder Suri, outlined DCVMN’s strategic focus for 2024-25: driving self-reliance and regional health security through sustainable local vaccine production in low- and middle-income countries. This effort centers on reducing R&D and manufacturing timelines using innovative technologies and partnerships, with initiatives like CEPI’s 100 Days Mission leading the charge.
DCVMN is also committed to environmental sustainability—a 2024-25 pilot project, in collaboration with financial institutions and partners like PATH and other financial institutions, will help reduce carbon footprints and guide members toward Net Zero emissions. Additionally, regulatory harmonization through reliance and collaborative review processes remains a priority.
The discussion also emphasized the critical role of Gavi’s AVMA and First Response Fund in supporting African vaccine manufacturers. However, success hinges on market commitments, firm forecasts, upfront funding, early tech transfers, and the seamless flow of resources.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆? Early engagement with manufacturers is essential, and working together as equal partners is key to both improving vaccine access and creating sustainable solutions for a healthier planet.
