Meningococcal A Meningococcal vaccine refers to any one of a number of vaccines used against Neisseria meningitidis, a bacterium that causes meningitis, meningococcemia, septicemia, and rarely carditis, septic arthritis, or pneumonia. Six serogroups, A, B, C, Y, W-135, and X, are responsible for virtually all cases of the disease in humans. Several types of vaccine are available: polysaccharide vaccines — available in either bivalent (groups A and C), trivalent (groups A, C and W135), or tetravalent (groups A, C, W135 and Y) forms; and conjugate vaccines against group A and group C and tetravalent vaccines against groups A, C, W135 and Y.
